Chapter 15

Bill pulled out two GameDude portable gaming systems, setting them down in front of each of them. “This is your VGA communicator.”

Zoe snatched hers up, turning it on. “This looks like a regular GameDude. I already have one of these. How do we use it to communicate?”

“Sure, it looks like a normal GameDude,” Bill said, “but it’s not. It actually came from the game SimLife and was brought back by divers.”

“What?” Max asked as he grabbed his, turning it on as well. “This came out of a game?”

Bill nodded. “Yep, in SimLife they’re used for playing games and communicating. Our tech team was able to get them functioning here and they have a unique communication field which only allows them to communicate with each other. Unhackable and untraceable. It doesn’t even use the normal internet.”

“So awesome . . .” Max muttered as he played with his device. He cocked his head, confused for a moment. “I can’t get the slot open to put in a game.”

Bill cleared his throat. “Ah, yeah. It doesn’t actually do that. You can only play the games that are on it. But it’s not for that, anyway. It’s so we can stay in touch. We’ll let you know when you’re needed and call you in, but a lot of your training will be done during the day on the school campus.”

Max held up a hand. “Wait a minute. What about our education?”

“Ugggghhh . . . blech.” Zoe feigned gagging.

Max rolled his eyes. “Being a secret agent is cool, but we still need to graduate and stuff.”

“Don’t worry about that,” Bill said. “Just because we own the school doesn’t mean it’s not a real school. A good one at that.” His device beeped and he pulled it from his pocket. “Ah. Our people have started your background check, and it seems your dad is on his way home.”

“Background check?” Zoe’s eyebrows rose.

“Yeah, standard protocol for all recruits. Nothing for you to worry about, just have to keep our i’s dotted and t’s crossed.”

“I don’t know if I like that . . .” Zoe eyed the man.

“Well, it’s all part of the job. Don’t worry—you won’t get in trouble for anything we find. This is to help us keep you safe, and to protect the agency from another DoubleStrike issue.”

Max and Zoe nodded.

“Alright, then. Let’s get you home before your dad gets back. It’s much easier to fool a crowd than a single person. We’ve stalled traffic as much as we can, giving him lots of red lights, but we don’t have time for more questions.”

He ushered them out of his office to a door that opened, revealing a parking lot. A bright red sports car with windows tinted so dark they almost looked like mirrors waited for them, engine running. The window rolled down and Cara Loft smiled from the driver’s seat, giving them a wink. “Get in. We’ve got a lot of ground to cover.”

“Can’t you just teleport us like that trick with the envelope?” Max asked.
